1st Grade Teachers

Mrs. Ruiz

Hello, my name is Marcia Ruiz. I have been a teacher here at Jose de Diego for 24 years.  I have a B.A. in Psychology and a M.A. in Reading. I have taught kindergarten, first, and second grade. I worked in the reading lab for two years, was a Reading Coach for two years, and as a Reading Interventionists for second and third graders for one year. After a year as an interventionist I returned to the classroom as as first grade teacher.  I’m a proud mother of three adult sons, Noel, Joel, and Nathan. I have five grandchildren: Javier, Alina, Nathan, Haley and Ethan. I’m married to a wonderful man named Noel who has been a great supporter of all my decisions in life. I’m passionate about teaching and making a difference in the lives of my students. You can contact Mrs. Ruiz at MRuiz5@cps.edu

Mrs. Gustafson

I met and married my high school sweetheart. After he passed the bar exam, we had our beautiful son Matthew. This begins my 14th year as an educator; though it’s been in my heart forever, as both of my parents are teachers! When I’m not reading mystery novels and children’s books to my son, I’m attempting crossword puzzles. You want to know something silly about me? I collect motion pens from around the world. I love crazy pens, and friends and family just keep finding them for me!

Ms. Caruso

Hello! My name is Gina Caruso and this is my fourth year at de Diego.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year in first grade. Teaching young students is my passion and I am so excited to see all the things room 126 will accomplish this year.
I graduated from University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. While in Champaign, I studied both psychology and dance. I recently received my Masters of Arts in Teaching from Dominican University. I am originally from the Chicago suburbs and have also lived in Palm Springs, California. In my spare time I enjoy relaxing with family and friends. I also love reading, yoga, and playing with my new puppy. I’m looking forward to a fantastic year working with students and parents to help each child reach their full potential.
